12.1.35. Create prefabricated workpieces for lathes

 
 
There are two methods you can use to create prefabricated workpieces for lathe machines.
 
The first method is by first turning the workpiece to a desired shape and then save it using the Save Workpiece option in the Tools menu. Before saving it, please not that you can also flip it over using the Flip or rotate workpiece option in the Tools menu. This is convenient if you want to continue tooling the backside of the part.
 
 
A file with the workpiece shape will be saved on your storage. You will also be asked if you want to create a new workpiece in the registry using this prefabricated workpiece file. Normally answer Yes to this question as it saves you the work of creating it yourself.
 
Please note that when you use this method of creating a workpiece you will not be able to change the resolution of the workpiece buffer when doing simulations with it. So simulate with the desired resolution before creating workpieces using this method.
 
The second method of creating workpieces for lathes is by drawing the desired shape as a SimCam contour and then selecting [Prefab] from the contour popup menu.
 
On a blank SimCam document, click the Layers button and then click the gear button in the layers forms toolbar to create a new layer. Select No operation.
 
 
On the new layer, create a contour with the desired shape of the workpiece. Draw it all the way to zero in the Z axis.
 
 
Click on the contour and select [Prefab] from the menu.
 
 
Browse to a location folder for the prefab file and enter a filename, then click Save. You will be asked if you want to create a new workpiece in the registry using this prefabricated workpiece file. Normally answer Yes to this question as it saves you the work of creating it yourself.
 
Open the Inventory Browser (F2) and click the Lathe Workpieces tab.  Check the last workpiece in the list, there you will find your new workpiece.
 
 
You can now use it when simulating or as a stock workpiece in SimCam.
 
A final note about the two methods:
 
Method one:
 
The advantage of this method is that you can create workpieces with holes in them. Any shape that you can manufacture can be saved with this method. The disadvantage is that the resolution is fixed and cannot be changed afterwards and this method also takes more work as a CNC program needs to be created.
 
Method two:
 
The advantage of this method is that it is fast and easy to just create a contour in SimCam for the desired shape. It is also possible to change the resolutions with workpieces created using this method. The disadvantage is that hollow pieces cannot be created using this method. Only outer contours are allowed.
